The Chemistry of Joy: A Three-Step Program for Overcoming Depression Through Western Science and Eastern Wisdom
Item Description
The Chemistry of Joy presents Dr. Emmons's natural approach to depression -- supplemented with medication if necessary -- blending the best of Western science and Eastern philosophy to create your body's own biochemistry of joy. Integrating Western brain chemistry, natural and Ayurvedic medicine, Buddhist psychology, and his own joyful heart techniques, Dr. Emmons creates a practical program for each of the three types of depression: anxious depression, agitated depression, and sluggish depression. The Chemistry of Joy helps you to identify which type of depression you are experiencing and provides a specific diet and exercise plan to address it, as well as nutritional supplements and "psychology of mindfulness" exercises that can restore your body's natural balance and energy. This flexible approach creates newfound joy for those whose lives have been touched by depression -- and pathways for all who seek to actively improve their emotional lives.

This is a wonderful book whether you suffer from depression or not. Everyone gets off-center sometimes, and this is a great explanation as to figuring out your particular tendencies and how to deal with them when (or before) they happen. Great perspective on how to use Western medicine appropriately and how to incorporate alternative therapies. Scientific while still being an easy read.

I've been depressed for 5 years, this book is one of the best, I'm surprised that it's not that popular, i would say it's on the level of the book by D. Burns "Feeling good", they're different, but both of them are really good. The meditation exercises are really helpful, they get my mood up right away. The author writes really well, very understandable. I got a lot of valuable things out of this book. Buy it and you won't regret it!

By examining brain chemistry, medication, ayurvedic types and buddhist emotional types, this books gives a good overview of the ways in which our minds-bodies-spirits work together as a whole, impacting our health and well-being. Packed with information and details about how food can function as medicine, how breathing, movement, beliefs, attitudes and more can impact our sense of well being, the book serves as a practical do-able guide towards steps you can take to begin to change your personal chemistry and biology today.
Great book for general public, clients, and clinicians!

This is one of the most helpful books out there for treating depression. And most of the concepts and advice are useful for anxiety as well. Easy to read, excellent illustrative examples, non repetitive, concise, and accurate. Even if you don't go in for the Eastern views on diagnosis and treatment (although I personally believe that the practice if mindfulness is one the best treatment modalities out there), the first section on understanding and taking care of your brain is well worth the price of admission alone. Thank You for this informative and innovative book!
