Academic Notes: Ayurveda and Understanding the Tongue

Excessive cracks on the tongue is an indication that vata dosha is vitiated, specifically the dry quality. The more cracks, the more significant the vata vitiation and the more oil and nourishing substances the patient will need to re-establish balance. Daily abhyanga with vata-pacifying oils such as sesame and almond is highly beneficial, along with the internal consumption of high quality, vata-balancing oils such as ghee and sesame oil. Demulcent and tonifying herbs are also recommended to nourish and rehydrate rasa dhatu. For the most accurate diagnosis, the tongue should be evaluated on an empty stomach or between meals.
