Step 1 of 4

A Cornerstone of Colon Health and Panchakarma

This one-day, hands-on, advanced course teaches the art and science of rectal Basti, an essential part of the Panchakarma process and a cornerstone of care for colon health.

Oil Basti (Anuvasana Basti) nourishes the colon, pacifies Vata dosha, and supports healing from Vata-related conditions. Decoction enemas (Nirooha Basti) cleanse the colon and help remove ama (toxic buildup) from the body, benefiting all three doshas.

Shanti Komala Basti™ means “peaceful, gentle enema.” It’s a technique developed at the California College of Ayurveda specifically to make the experience of receiving an enema nurturing and comfortable, rather than clinical and impersonal.

Curriculum Includes

  • Oil Basti (Anuvasana Basti): preparation and administration to nourish the colon and pacify Vata
  • Decoction Basti (Nirooha Basti): preparation and administration to cleanse the colon and remove ama
  • The Shanti Komala™ technique: CCA’s method for administering Basti gently and comfortably
  • Patient setup and positioning, and how to support easy self-administration

Frequently Asked Questions

Shanti Komala Basti™ (“peaceful, gentle enema”) is a technique developed at CCA to make rectal Basti, one of Ayurveda's core Panchakarma therapies, a comfortable and nurturing clinical experience rather than a purely mechanical procedure. Unlike a standard enema, Basti is chosen and formulated by dosha: oil-based Anuvasana Basti nourishes the colon and pacifies Vata, while decoction-based Nirooha Basti cleanses the colon and clears ama. The Shanti Komala™ approach focuses specifically on patient setup, pacing, and support so the treatment itself is administered gently.

Oil Basti (Anuvasana Basti) uses medicated oil to nourish tissue and pacify Vata dosha, and is generally used for conditions rooted in Vata imbalance. Decoction Basti (Nirooha Basti) uses an herbal decoction to cleanse the colon and remove ama, or toxic buildup, and benefits all three doshas. Panchakarma protocols often use both in sequence, depending on the patient's constitution and condition.

All students learn both to give and to receive Basti as part of this course, since hands-on practice is central to learning the technique. That said, no one is required to participate in any specific phase of the procedure, and students may opt out of any part that makes them uncomfortable.

Yes. Shanti Komala Basti™ requires completion of Principles of Ayurvedic Medicine, the Panchakarma Theory Module, and the Ayurvedic Massage & Bliss Therapy Program. See Prerequisites above.

Yes. Shanti Komala Basti™ is the second of three workshops that make up CCA's Panchakarma Specialist Workshop track, alongside Clinical Nasya and Designing Panchakarma Programs & Case Management. Students can take it on its own or as part of the full sequence.

California College of Ayurveda is state-approved, not accredited. It was the first state-approved Ayurvedic college in the United States, receiving state approval for its programs in 1996.
